Free Alphabet Colouring Worksheets for Preschoolers (Aussie Animal Edition)

A free printable that pairs letters with Australian animals: ant, frog, koala, octopus, platypus and yabby.
Looking for free alphabet colouring worksheets for your preschooler? You're in the right place.
Colouring is one of the easiest ways to make the alphabet feel like play. Your child picks up a crayon, meets a friendly animal and learns a letter without realising it is "learning". So we made a free printable that pairs letters with Australian animals: an ant, a frog, a koala, an octopus, a platypus and a yabby.
It's made by the team behind G'day Little Learners, with an early childhood educator, for kids aged 3 to 6 who are getting ready for kindy, pre-school and Foundation (Prep).
What's on the worksheet
Each of the six boxes pairs a letter with an animal, such as A is for Ant and K is for Koala. Your child:
- Looks at the letter and the animal
- Colours the animal in any colours they like
- Traces the dotted word on the writing lines underneath
There's a space at the top for their name and the date, so it can go on the fridge or into a school folder. Printing tip: print at 100% ("actual size") on plain A4 paper. If you plan to use textas, use slightly thicker paper so the colour doesn't show through.
How to use it with your child
- Say the letter and the animal together. Point to the big letter and say, "A is for Ant." Let your child say it back.
- Let them choose the colours. A purple koala is fine. This is about enjoying the page and building pencil control.
- Trace the word slowly. Remind them to start at the top of each letter and go down. Don't worry about perfect lines.
- Go on a letter hunt. Find the same letter on a cereal box, a street sign or a book cover.
- Show it off. Stick the finished sheet on the fridge and talk about it at dinner.
Why colouring helps with learning letters
Colouring gives little hands real practice with holding a pencil and controlling it, which they will need for writing later. Pairing a letter with a picture also gives children something to remember it by. And because colouring is calm and unhurried, it's a good way to spend ten minutes of screen-free time.
Tips by age
- Age 3: Use chunky crayons and let them scribble. Just point to the first letter and say its name.
- Age 4: Encourage them to colour mostly inside the lines and have a go at tracing the dotted word.
- Ages 5โ6: Ask them to trace the word and then write it again on a separate sheet. Can they think of another animal that starts with the same letter?
Four easy ways to turn it into a game
- Letter hunt: Give your child a pencil and ask them to circle every A they can find on a page of a picture book.
- I spy: "I spy something that starts with K."
- Animal sounds and moves: Hop like a kangaroo, waddle like a platypus. Then find the letter for each animal.
- Colour match: Choose real-life colours (a green frog, a grey koala) and then try something silly.
This sheet is just a taste. My ABC Adventure is Book 1 in the G'day Little Learners series: a colourful, screen-free alphabet activity book for ages 3โ6, with Kip the Koala as your child's guide. Inside, every letter gets its own page with four activities: trace the capital letter with numbered stroke arrows, trace the small letter, find and circle the hidden letters, and colour the Aussie animal and trace its name. Then ABC review games carry on the fun: matching capital and small letters, missing letters, first-letter match, colour by letter, and writing their name. It also makes a great birthday or Christmas gift for little learners aged 3โ6.
