Letter recognition is the foundation for reading, and it grows through play. These ideas need almost no prep.

Letter recognition means looking at a letter and knowing its name. It is the foundation for reading, and it grows through play more than drilling. These ideas need no printer and almost no prep.

15 ideas to try

  1. Letter hunt at home. Pick a letter and find five things that start with it.
  2. Shaving foam letters. Spread foam on a tray and finger-write.
  3. Playdough snakes. Roll and shape letters.
  4. Sticky note search. Write letters on sticky notes, hide them around the room and let your child find and name them.
  5. Chalk letters outside. Draw big letters on the path and walk or hop along them.
  6. Name letters. Start with the letters in your child's name, since those have the most meaning.
  7. Magnetic letters. Pull out the letters of a word on the fridge.
  8. Alphabet soup. Hide plastic or foam letters in a tub of rice or water and scoop for letters.
  9. Sand tray writing. Use a baking tray with a thin layer of sand or salt.
  10. Letter spotting on walks. Find a letter on a sign, number plate or shop front.
  11. Odd one out. Write four letters, three the same, and ask which is different.
  12. Alphabet puzzle. Pick up a wooden or foam puzzle and say each letter as it goes in.
  13. Body letters. Make the shape of a letter with arms and legs.
  14. Bath tub letters. Foam letters stick to the wall.
  15. Find and circle. Hide target letters in a grid and ask your child to circle them all. This one does need paper, so it is a good one to print.

Keep it light

Two or three letters at a time is enough. If your child gets frustrated, switch to a movement game and come back later.
