Why animals work for the alphabet
Children remember a letter when it is attached to a picture, a sound and a story. Ant starts with A, Koala starts with K and Quokka starts with Q. A cute animal makes the letter memorable.
A few Aussie letter favourites
- A is for Ant: Tiny but strong. Children love spotting ants outside.
- B is for Bilby: A small desert animal with big ears.
- D is for Dingo: A wild dog found across Australia.
- G is for Galah: A pink and grey cockatoo.
- K is for Koala: Not a bear, but a marsupial that sleeps a lot.
- P is for Platypus: An egg-laying mammal with a bill.
- Q is for Quokka: Famous for looking like it is smiling.
- Y is for Yabby: A freshwater crayfish.
Ideas for animal alphabet play
- Pick an animal a day and learn one fact.
- Make animal sounds and actions.
- Draw the animal from memory, then colour the page.
- Visit a zoo or wildlife park and tick off the animals.
- Make an animal alphabet wall chart.
