Pencil grip tips for little hands
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator · 4 min read
Is your child gripping the pencil like a fist? That's normal — here's how to help it develop.
Pencil grip develops in stages. Most 3-year-olds use a fist grip, and that's perfectly okay.
Use short crayons
Broken crayons naturally encourage a fingertip grip because there's no room for a whole fist.
Work on vertical surfaces
Drawing on paper taped to a wall builds shoulder and wrist strength.
Trace before writing
Tracing lines, curves and loops prepares the hand for letters without the pressure of 'getting it right'.
