Worksheets for 3 Year Olds: Gentle Ways to Start
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 4 min read
At three, worksheets are mostly about scribbling, colouring and big easy lines. Here is how to start gently.
For a three-year-old, paper activities are just another kind of play. There is no need for rules or neatness. The goal is to enjoy holding a crayon.
What three-year-olds enjoy
- Scribbling and colouring big shapes.
- Tracing big straight lines and wavy lines.
- Stickers and simple matching.
- Counting a few things.
- Playing with playdough and paint.
Tips for starting
- Keep sessions to five minutes or less.
- Use chunky crayons.
- Sit together.
- Praise the effort, not the result.
- Stop when they have had enough.
Play first
Fine motor play with playdough, pegs and water prepares hands for writing. Worksheets are a bonus, not a must.
