Pattern Activities for Preschoolers: AB, ABB and ABC Patterns
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 4 min read
Patterns are early maths in disguise. Here is how AB, ABB and ABC patterns work, with games and a free pack.
A pattern is something that repeats in a predictable way. Spotting and continuing patterns helps children predict what comes next, and that is a building block of maths.
Types of patterns
- AB: red, blue, red, blue
- ABB: circle, square, square, circle, square, square
- ABC: star, heart, diamond, star, heart, diamond
Where to begin
Start with AB patterns using two colours or two objects. Once your child can continue them easily, try ABB and then ABC.
Pattern activities
- Thread beads in a pattern.
- Line up blocks or toy cars.
- Clap and stomp: clap, clap, stomp.
- Make a pattern with snack items like grapes and crackers.
- Print a pattern with sponges and paint.
- Find patterns on clothes, fences and tiles.
Tips
- Say the pattern out loud: red, blue, red, blue.
- Ask What comes next?
- Let your child make a pattern for you to continue.
- Start with real objects, then move to paper.
