Literacy is more than reading. It is listening, talking, noticing sounds, enjoying stories and making marks on paper. The good news is that all of it can grow through everyday moments at home. Here are 25 easy ideas, grouped by skill.
Sounds
- I spy with sounds: "I spy something that starts with mmm."
- Sound bag: pull small objects from a bag and say the first sound.
- Sound of the day: pick one sound and spot it all day.
- Mystery box: feel an object, guess it, then say its first sound.
- Silly sound songs: sing a favourite tune using one sound for every word.
Rhymes
- Read rhyming books and pause before the rhyming word.
- Rhyme ping-pong: take turns saying words that rhyme.
- Say nursery rhymes in the car.
- Silly rhyme names: Bill, Dill, Mill.
- Rhyme hunt: find two things that rhyme, such as a mat and a hat.
Books and stories
- Read together every day, even for five minutes.
- Ask "What do you think happens next?"
- Point to the words as you read.
- Let your child "read" the pictures and tell the story.
- Visit the library and let them choose.
Words and letters
- Label things at home: door, bed, table.
- Make a name puzzle from the letters of their name.
- Clap the syllables in names and animals.
- Put magnetic letters on the fridge.
- Word hunt on walks: stop, exit, open.
Writing and drawing
- Draw a picture and tell a story about it.
- Trace their name.
- Write a shopping list together.
- Make a card for someone.
- Write in sand, shaving foam or flour.
