How to Choose a Phonics Workbook for Ages 3–6 (and Mistakes to Avoid)
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator · 5 min read
There are lots of phonics workbooks out there. Here is a simple way to choose one your child will enjoy and learn from.
A good phonics workbook can make early reading feel like a game. A poor one can make a young child feel stuck. Here is how to choose well.
What a good phonics workbook does
- Teaches the sound each letter makes, not just its name.
- Starts with simple sounds and builds slowly.
- Keeps pages short, with one idea at a time.
- Uses clear pictures children can name easily.
- Mixes tracing, circling, colouring and matching.
- Adds rhyming and listening games, not only writing.
- Moves on to simple words only after the sounds are familiar.
Ten questions to ask
- Does it teach letter sounds, not just letter names?
- Does it start with simple sounds such as s, a, t, p, i, n?
- Are the pages short, with one idea each?
- Are the pictures clear and easy to name?
- Are there rhyming and listening games?
- Does it build simple words after the sounds?
- Does it introduce only a few sight words at first?
- Is there space to colour, trace and write?
- Does it match how your child's school teaches?
- Would your child ask for "one more page"?
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying for the age on the cover instead of your child's stage.
- Choosing a workbook that is mostly writing for a child who is still learning to hold a pencil.
- Doing too much at once. A few pages a day is enough.
- Skipping the games. Listening and rhyming are part of phonics too.
- Pushing on when your child is tired or upset. Stop and try again tomorrow.
