5 gentle ways to get your child ready for kindy

By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator · 4 min read

Kindy readiness isn't about knowing everything — it's about confidence, curiosity and small daily habits.

Starting kindy is a big step for little ones — and for parents too. The good news: the skills that matter most grow naturally through play at home.

1. Make letters part of everyday life

Point out the first letter of your child's name on signs, cereal boxes and number plates. Recognising familiar letters builds the very first foundations of reading.

2. Strengthen little hands

Playdough, pegs, tearing paper and tracing lines all build the finger strength children need to hold a pencil comfortably.

3. Count everything

Count steps, apples, birds in the backyard. Saying numbers aloud while touching objects helps children understand what numbers really mean.

4. Practise sitting with a task

Ten minutes with a colouring or tracing page builds focus — a skill teachers love to see on day one.

5. Celebrate trying

Praise effort, not perfection. A child who feels proud of trying walks into kindy ready to learn.
