CVC Words for Beginners: A Simple List and 10 Games
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 5 min read
CVC words are three-letter words like cat, pig and sun. Here is a simple list and 10 games to practise them.
CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. These are short words such as cat, pig and sun, where each letter makes its own sound. They are a perfect first step into reading because children can sound them out one letter at a time.
When is a child ready?
Children are usually ready for CVC words once they know a handful of letter sounds, such as s, a, t, p, i and n, and can say each sound clearly. Start with a few words and add more slowly.
A simple CVC word list
- Short a: cat, bat, hat, mat, sat
- Short e: hen, pet, web, net, red
- Short i: pig, fin, sit, lip, zip
- Short o: dog, log, hop, pot, mop
- Short u: bug, sun, cup, mud, rug
How to blend a CVC word
- Show the three letters.
- Say each sound slowly: c, a, t.
- Slide the sounds together: caaat.
- Say the word: cat.
- Do it again, a little faster.
10 CVC word games
- Sound buttons: tap a dot under each letter as you say its sound.
- Word ladder: change one letter at a time, from cat to bat to bit.
- Magnetic letter swap: build a word, then swap the middle letter.
- Cut and glue tiles: cut out letter tiles and glue them in order.
- Treasure bag: put small objects (cup, pen, pig toy) in a bag, pull one out and spell it.
- Chalk hopscotch: write letters on the ground and hop to spell a word.
- Roll a word: use letter dice to make words, real or silly.
- Fill in the vowel: write c_t and see which vowels make a word.
- Playdough words: roll letters and build words.
- Read and act: write a word like hop or sit and act it out.
Silly words are fine
Children often make words that are not real, such as "dat". That is great practice because it shows they are blending sounds, not just remembering words. Help them check by asking, "Is that a real word?"
