Preschool Maths Worksheets: What Your Child Should Know Before Prep
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 4 min read
You do not need to drill maths before school. Here are the early skills to look for, with a free checklist.
Many parents wonder what maths their child should know before Prep. The answer is less than you may think. Schools expect children to arrive curious and ready to learn, not already doing sums.
Early maths skills to look for
- Counting a small group of objects.
- Reciting numbers in order to 10 or beyond.
- Recognising some written numbers.
- Sorting objects by colour, size or shape.
- Naming basic shapes.
- Understanding big and small, more and less.
- Noticing simple patterns.
- Using words like first, next and last.
How to build these skills
Play is the best way. Count steps, sort washing, bake together, build with blocks and spot shapes on walks. Short, happy moments beat worksheets pushed too soon.
A note on pressure
Every child develops at their own pace. The checklist is a conversation starter, not a test. If you are unsure, chat with your child's early learning teacher or your school.
Using worksheets well
Preschool maths worksheets can be a helpful part of the mix. Choose simple pages with one idea, keep sessions to ten minutes and stop when your child has had enough.
