Number Tracing Worksheets 1–20 (Free Sample Pages)
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator · 4 min read
Tracing numbers helps children learn how each one is formed. Here are free pages for 1 to 20 and tips for getting started.
Before children can write numbers, they need to see how each one is formed. Tracing gives them that practice with a guide to follow. These free pages cover 1 to 20.
When to start
Many children are ready to trace numbers around age 4, once they can count a few objects and hold a pencil or crayon comfortably. Younger children can trace with a finger or draw big numbers in sand or paint first.
Tips for teaching number formation
- Start with 1 to 5 and add more numbers slowly.
- Say the number as you trace it.
- Begin each number at the top, except where it needs a curve first.
- Use a chunky pencil or crayon.
- Trace with a finger first, then a pencil.
- Praise effort, not neatness.
Numbers that often get reversed
It is very common for children to write 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 back to front when they begin. That is a normal part of learning. Keep tracing and keep it relaxed.
How to use the free pages
- Say the number and count that many things.
- Trace it with a finger.
- Trace it with a pencil.
- Write it again on the line.
- Colour a star for each number you finish.
Counting with Aussie Animals gives every number from 1 to 20 its own page to trace, count and colour, with a friendly Australian animal for each.
