Kindergarten Worksheets in Australia: What Foundation Teachers Look For

By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 5 min read

The word kindergarten means different things across Australia. Here is what teachers typically hope to see and how to prepare.

In New South Wales and the ACT, Kindergarten is the first year of school. In Victoria it often means the year of preschool before Foundation. Whatever it is called where you live, parents often ask what teachers look for.

What teachers often value

  • Curiosity and willingness to try.
  • Listening and following simple instructions.
  • Getting along with other children.
  • Independence with toileting, dressing and lunchboxes.
  • A little pencil control.
  • Early interest in letters and numbers.

Worksheets that fit

Simple tracing, matching, counting and colouring pages can support these skills. Choose pages with one idea, and keep sessions short.

What is not needed

Children are not expected to read fluently or do sums before school. Schools teach these skills.
