How to Teach Pencil Grip: Tips for Ages 3โ5
By Sadia Afrin, Early Childhood Educator ยท 4 min read
Pencil grip develops in stages. Here are gentle ways to help your child, plus a free four-step guide.
Many parents worry about pencil grip. The good news is that grip develops in stages. Young children often hold a pencil in their whole fist at first, and that is normal. With play and gentle practice, most children move towards a more comfortable grip.
Build strength first
A good grip needs strong little fingers and a stable shoulder and wrist. Play with playdough, pegs, tongs and water squirters. Draw on a wall or an easel, because working upright builds shoulder strength.
Four steps to a comfortable grip
- Pinch: pinch the pencil tip between the thumb and pointer finger.
- Rest: rest the pencil on the middle finger.
- Tuck: tuck the ring and little fingers into the palm.
- Wiggle: move the pencil with small finger wiggles.
Tips that help
- Use short crayons or broken pencils so fingers must pinch.
- Tape paper to a wall or use an easel.
- Try a small sponge or cotton ball held in the palm by the last two fingers.
- Keep sessions to five or ten minutes.
- Do not force a grip. Stay relaxed.
When to ask for help
If your child is in school and writing is very tiring or painful, or if you are concerned about hand skills, talk to your GP, teacher or an occupational therapist. This guide is general information only.
